Top 10 iPhone hidden features

From automatic messages to the easy undo function, discover our top ten hidden iPhone features. These handy iPhone tricks will help you save time and get the most out of your smartphone.

1. Create custom iMessage replies to calls

If you get a call that you can’t answer – whether because you’re in a meeting or in the bath – you can send a pre-written message as a reply. You will either get a message icon when your phone rings or have the ability to swipe upwards on the phone icon to activate this feature.

You should get four options: “Sorry, I can’t talk right now”, “I’m on my way”, “Can I call you later?” and custom, which will let you type. You can also customise the three pre-written replies under Settings > Phone > Respond With Text to get quick options that are personalised to you.

2. Set custom vibrations

Setting individual ringtones is a simple way to ensure you always know who’s calling, but you can also set custom vibrations if you prefer your phone on silent. To do this, select a contact, then tap Edit and scroll to vibration – there are several pre-set options to choose from here – and further down is the Create New Vibration option, where you can tap out a custom rhythm.

3. Do-Not-Disturb while driving

This feature blocks incoming notifications and calls and generates an automated reply for set contacts to say that you’re driving and can’t answer. This can be set to automatically activate when your phone thinks you are driving, activate when connected to the car’s Bluetooth, or be activated manually.

This feature is under Settings > Do Not Disturb – where you will find Do Not Disturb While Driving, which you can tap to activate.

4. Use your headphones to take a selfie

You might know that you can take a picture using the volume up button on your phone, to reduce the risk of shaking the camera, but did you know this works on headphones? As long as your headphones are connected, you can press the volume up button when in the Camera app to take a photo.

This feature is great for taking Instagram-worthy photos, especially if your hands are not the steadiest.

5. Take photos in burst mode

Burst mode lets you capture ten photos every second to help you get the great action shot, without mistiming your photo. To activate burst mode, all you have to do is hold down the camera’s shutter button and then pick the best photo from your options. It’s a fantastic feature to help you take the best photos on your phone.

6. Quickly add symbols when typing

Adding symbols or numbers when typing can be a pain – unless you know the trick, that is. Instead of clicking to navigate to the different keyboards and then clicking back, simply hold down the 123 button and then swipe to the symbol you need. Once you let go the keyboard will automatically return to normal to let you finish typing.

If you swipe to the symbol and hold for a second, it will bring up more options – letting you find all symbols this way.

7. Shake to undo

If you accidentally delete the text you just spent ten minutes perfectly crafting, then this feature is perfect for you. Simply shake your iPhone and a pop-up asking if you want to undo your typing will appear. This saves you time, as you don’t have to search for the elusive undo button, which is hidden in the landscape keyboard.

8. Activate the cursor

From the iPhone 7 and later models, you can activate a cursor that allows for improved precision. This is ideal for instances when you have to delete certain words or letters and need to get the text cursor in the right place. All you need to do is press down on the screen and your finger will become a cursor.

9. Stop music with a timer

If you like falling asleep to music, then this function is the one for you. Just open the timer tab in the Clock app and choose how long you want the time to last, then scroll down and select Stop Playing. After you hit start you can start music from the Music app and it will naturally fade out when the timer stops.

10. Hide private photos

If you want to make sure that people don’t see your personal photos when handing over your phone, then you can use this trick to make photos disappear from the Moments, Collections, and Years views. To do this, you just need to select the photo in the Photos app, tap the Share button and choose the Hide option.
