It’s time again for mobile news at The Hub! This week we’ve heard some more rumours about the new OnePlus 5 as well as the Nokia 9, Nokia’s new flagship smartphone. LG has also sparked rumours that they’re planning on launching a competitor to Android Pay by trademarking LG Wallet. The full specs and release dates have now been announced for the Moto Z2 Play, and Android O has been confirmed for the Nokia 6, 5, and 3.
OnePlus 5 news and rumours
The Chinese startup OnePlus has confirmed that new OnePlus 5 is set to be released in summer of 2017. OnePlus has consistently stood out for their high-end hardware at mid-range prices so we’re very excited for their new flagship model.
OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 5 will use the high-end Snapdragon 835 chipset and internal speed test obtained by Techradar shows that the new model could, in fact, be faster than the Samsung S8 and the Google Pixel XL.
While not confirmed, a dual-lens camera is all but certain after a series of leaks including a picture of the box which says “Dual Camera. Clearer Photos.” There have been rumours that they are upping the screen resolution from the 1080 x 1920 of the 3T to 1440 x 2560 – though these rumours also suggest a reduced screen size from 5.5 inches to 5.3.
Battery power is also rumoured to increase from 3,400mAh to 4000mAh and early rumours had internal storage increasing to a huge 128GB. But, all these spec improvements are rumoured to have put an end to the incredibly low prices we came to expect from this brand.
Android O confirmed for Nokia 6, 5, and 3
Android O has been confirmed for the new Nokia 6, 5, and 3 by HMD Global. Android O – which still hasn’t gotten an official code name yet – is not due for release until September or October of 2017. We don’t expect the new Nokia handsets to get the update immediately so there will still be a wait for the new OS.
The Nokia 6, 5, and 3 will be running a version of Android Nougat that should make the switch to Android O faster and easier.
Moto Z2 Play release date and full features
The new Moto Z2 Play boasts some impressive improvements over the Z Play. This phone is Moto’s mid-tier smartphone that is mod-compatible – that last remaining line of the modular phone planes from 2016.
The Z2 Play is a full millimetre thinner than the original and is faster with the Snapdragon 626 octa-core chipset and runs the latest version of Android Nougat. This comes with either 3 or 4 GM RAM and 32 or 64GB of internal storage.
The slimming down has meant that the battery has been reduced from 3,510mAh down to 3,000mAh, but this has made the phone 20g lighter. Also downgraded is the camera resolution dropping from 16MP to 12MP – however they have changed the aperture lens to f/1.7 for better low-light photography.
As expected, the phone will support Moto mods to customise it for your use – including speakers, improved battery, wireless charging, and the ability to switch between these mods at need.
LG trademarks LG Wallet – hinting at Android Pay rival
LG has submitted a trademark application for the term LG Wallet in both the US and South Korea. The description refers to the trademark as “computer software, names, an electronic financial platform that accommodates multiple types of payment and debt payment and debt transactions in an integrated mobile device.”
This makes clear that LG is creating some kind of rival to Android Pay, but LG Wallet could end up being a very different product. LG has been working on a payment service since 2015 but there is little information on what form this will take.
Nokia 9 news and rumours
Nokia 9 is Nokia’s new flagship smartphone that is set to compete with the Samsung S8 and the iPhone 8. The official announcement for this phone is expected to happen sometime between now and August so we only have rumours about what it is going to look like.
The rumours around the Nokia 9 say that it is going to be very high-end including the Snapdragon 835 chipset with 8GB RAM and to run Android Nougat or higher.
We’ve heard there will be a 5.5-inch QHD OLED screen, QHD typically means a resolution of 1440 x 2560 which definitely puts it into the high-end market. It’s also supposed to have a huge 3,800mAh battery with fast charging which is unusual for a supposed 5.5inch size – but definitely possible.
The camera is rumoured to be a dual-lens 22MP Carl Zeiss camera which is far more MP than usual – but megapixels aren’t everything when it comes to picture quality. We’ve also heard that it is to have an all-metal body with water resistance, 3D audio recording, an iris scanner, and a fingerprint scanner.
These great specs we’ve heard about tie-in with the supposedly high price – possibly on a par with that of the new Samsung S8. Not bad for the first flagship Nokia smartphone.
