Mobile news: what happened this week?

Mobile Phone News

It’s mobile news time again at The Hub! This week discover why Samsung’s foldable phone is looking more likely, investigate the leaked iPhone X battery and RAM specs, and weigh up the news of Sony’s plan to redesign their smartphones. Also, read about how the Nokia 3310 is getting upgraded to 3G, and why it’s looking like Bixby will be coming the Samsung’s mid-range smartphones.

Sony phone redesign

We’re expecting a massive phone redesign from Sony following comments from a company executive. Sony has kept their design constant for a long time now and their phones are definitely due for an update.

Kenichiro Hibi, Sony India’s managing director, said: “We are planning to launch new generation of products and you can expect a complete new design from the devices.” While Hibi didn’t say what the redesign would look like, he apparently referenced the new bezel-free designs of the new flagship smartphones. We are hoping that we will see something similar in the next Sony flagship.

iPhone X battery and ram may have been revealed

Apple is notoriously secretive about the fine details of phones that haven’t been released yet, but some hidden iPhone X specs may have just been revealed as 2,716mAh battery and 3GB of RAM.

Coming from a web page by Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center (TENAA), we can say with some confidence that this information is accurate. While this could be a regional variant, these specs do appear in line with what we would expect.

Nokia 3310

Nokia 3310 to get 3G

Nokia’s nostalgic 3310 model that caused a sensation when it launched this summer is getting upgraded to 3G to help it fit in in the modern market. According to reports this will make the handset slightly bulkier and trim down on battery life – one of the main features of ‘dumbphones’ – but in return users will be able to access lite versions of Facebook, Skype, and Twitter.

While this will still definitely be a backup or festival phone for most users, the extra functionality could make it much more appealing to younger users.

Samsung foldable phone looks more likely

We’ve been hearing rumours of Samsungs foldable phone for years now but recently it looks like Samsung has registered a phone with the model number that we’ve heard is the designator for the foldable phone. The SM-G888 will still be in early stages but it looks likely that it could launch in 2018 and, if this is the phone we have been waiting for, it will be a huge event.

Samsung Galaxy A to get Bixby

Bixby is moving from high-end exclusivity down into the mid-range according to rumours coming out of China. It’s believed that this rollout could start with the next set of Galaxy A phones, taking the form of a dedicated Bixby button like higher end models.

However, while this is a move that does make sense for Samsung that will want to expand the reach of Bixby, the source of this rumour doesn’t yet have a good reputation for leaks so we’re taking this one with a pinch of salt.
