Mobile news: what happened this week?

From superhero smartphones to foldable screens and flip phones, it’s been a busy week for mobile news. Check out all the latest updates right here at Tesco Mobile…

Batman returns!

Fans of Gotham’s legendary superhero rejoice – Samsung has just announced a special edition Galaxy S7 Edge in homage to Batman. The official Samsung Mobile Twitter account teased “a new device for the battle against the Gods Among Us”, which ties in with the Batman mobile game Injustice: Gods Among Us, available on iOS and Android. This isn’t the first time Samsung has delved into the world of superhero merchandise, having released a limited edition Iron Man Galaxy S6 Edge last year. An official release date for the new handset is yet to be announced.

Samsung Galaxy X screen revealed

We already talked about Samsung’s rumoured foldable phone in our Mobile News a couple of weeks ago, but it has just been confirmed. The South Korean company has revealed its brand new roll-out LED display for the Galaxy X at SID Display Week 2016 in San Francisco. Like an old-fashioned scroll, the flexible screen can be rolled out, but currently doesn’t have a touchscreen layer. The screen is an ultra-thin 0.3mm and super high quality, with full HD 1080p resolution on a 5.7inch display. The Samsung Galaxy X is anticipated to be one of the first foldable phones on the market and should be available as soon as 2017.

Project Ara confirmed!

The LG G5 has teased us with a modular design, but Google’s Project Ara intends to take that to the next level with a completely modular smartphone. Announced at Google I/O 2016, Project Ara is designed to accommodate swappable parts unlike any other handset seen on the market today. A beta edition is set for release this autumn for those who are eager to get their hands on this new technology, with a consumer version set to launch next spring. The idea is to see what modules are popular upon its initial release and listen to demand, creating new modules to meet this.

Are flip phones making a comeback?

Remember the super-cool Motorola Razr – the flip phone that was all the rage over a decade ago? Just when we thought we’d seen the last of flip phones, Lenovo has teased a new handset that will bring the iconic design back. The company that acquired Motorola in 2014 released a trailer for the mysterious device, which gives us the date of 9 June 2016. It is likely we’ll learn more about the new device then, as it is the date of Lenovo’s Tech World conference. We’ll be sure to keep our eyes peeled for any teasers before then!
