HUAWEI & ANDROID: AN UPDATE

You may have seen Huawei in the news this week, so we wanted to give you an update and reassure any customers who use Huawei smartphones.

We’re continuing to monitor the situation to understand any and all potential implications for Tesco Mobile customers and we’ll update our FAQ with any further information as soon as we receive it.

I have a Huawei handset and I’m worried it won’t work as normal?

Huawei has told us that for its smartphones which are currently on the market, things will stay the same for now and the phones will continue to operate normally, including access to Google services such as Google Play and Gmail.

Can I get a refund if I have a Huawei handset and I don’t want to keep it anymore?

Huawei has told us that its smartphones that are currently on the market will continue to operate as normal.  So out of our standard cooling off period, you will not be able to return your smartphone for a refund on the basis of the current situation while your device continues to work as it should. We will continue to monitor the situation and advise customers if things change.

Will anything change in the future?

Huawei has confirmed its devices will continue to receive security updates from Android and will be covered by Huawei’s after-sales service.  Based on the current situation, availability of software updates (including apps and bug fixes) after 19 August 2019 cannot be confirmed and it’s possible the on-going issue could prevent the upgrade of existing apps from taking place.

What if I am thinking about buying a Huawei phone soon?

For anyone considering purchasing a Huawei device from Tesco Mobile, we want to ensure you have as much information as possible from that shared by Google and Huawei, so you can make the right choice for you.

  • To date, Huawei has not confirmed the availability of future Android updates for their devices.
  • However, the US Government has issued a partial and temporary license (expiring 19 August) which permits Huawei to provide service and support, including software updates and patches to existing Huawei devices that were available to the public on or before 16 May.
  • Based on the current situation, availability of software updates (including apps and bug fixes) after 19 August 2019 cannot be confirmed and it’s possible the ongoing issue could prevent the upgrade of existing apps from taking place.

We will of course continue to stay in touch with Google and Huawei keeping you updated will be our priority.
